Poet, script writer, lyricist. Film director Gulzar, aka Sampuran Singh, is one of the most versatile artists to leave his mark on cinema as well as literature. Winner of five National Awards and 17 Filmfare trophies besides the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Bhushan.
Sampooran Singh Gulzar was India’s first art-film director born in Dena (Now in Pakistan) on 18th August 1936. After partition he came to Delhi. Gulzar is the man who plays with words and embelishes in the form of poetry lyrics.Gulzar the uncrowded king of the world of words is also a film-maker, producer and script writer . As a teenager he always wanted to be a part of the film industry, but he had to work as garage mechanic. One day he followed his heart and landed in Mumbai. After a lot of struggle, he got a job as an assistant director to the famous Bimal Roy and also Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Gulzar was given his first break as a lyricist by Bimal Roy for his movie ‘Bandini’. His movie song ‘’Mora Gora Aang’’ became very popular, which gave Gulzar the much-awaited appreciation for his writing talent.
Gulzar is best known in the Hindi film industry for penning some of the best known compositions of Rahul Dev Burman. A part from Hindi he has written in Urdu, Punjabi, Marwari (Rajasthani) and Bhojpuri. His most famous songs have been associated with Rahul Dev Burman in movies such as “Parichay” (“Musafir hoon yaron” sung by Kishore Kumar), “Aandhi” (“Tera bina zindagi se koi” sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore), “Kushboo” (“Ghar Jaayegi” sung by Asha Bhonsle) and “Ijaazat” (“Mera kuch saaman” sung by Asha), “Masoom” (“Tujhse naraz nahi zindagi” sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Anoop Ghosal) to name a few. However he has had award-winning associations with Salil Chowdhary (for the movie “Anand”), Madan Mohan (“Mausam”), and more recently with Vishal Bharadwaj (“Maachis”), A.R.Rehman (“Dil Se”, “Guru”) and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (“Bunty aur Babli”).
Gulzar made his foray in the Hindi film industry as a lyricist in 1995 with “Swami Vivekanand”. His other memorable works as a lyricist are “Shriman Satyawadi”, “Bandini”, “Aashiewad”, “Mere Apne”, “Parichay”, “Aandhi”, “Mausam”, “Kinara”. The hex of his lyrics mesmerized the listeners and Gulzar won the Filmfare award for best lyricist for the film “Gharaonda” in 1977.
Gulzar,s magical pen did not stop and he went on with movies like “Palkon Ki Chchaon Mein” and “Ghar” and walked away with best lyricist Filmfare award for “Golmaal”. The next year he won the same for the film “Thodi Si Bewafai”. And his quest for success was never ending, this magician of words wrote songs for super-hit movies like “Namkeen”, “Angoor”, “Sadma” and put under his belt the best lyricist award for “Masoom”. For “Ijaazat” Gulzar bagged the National Award and the Filmfare Award for best lyricist.
Gulzar penned the lyrics for the movies like “Libaas” and won the Filmfare Award for “Lekin”. His lyrics were appreciated largely by listenere in “Rudaali”, “Khalnayak”, “Maachis”, “Aastha: In the Prison of Spring”,”Chachi 420”, “Sataya” and for “Dil Se” he won another Filmfare Award and continued enchanting the listeners in movies like “Hu Tu Tu”, “Khoobsurat”, “Pinjar”, “Makdee”, “Dil Vil Pyar Vyar”, “Filhaal”, “Asoka”, “Saathiya”, “Aks”, and “Yahaan”. Recently he won the best lyricist Filmfare Award for “Bunt Aur Bubli”.
But there was much more than poetries and lyrics through which Gulzar entered the hearts of audience. The films directed by Gulzar which left the audience amazed are “Lekin”, “Mere Apne”, “Namkeen”, “Ijazaat”, and “Hu Tu Tu”. For his film “Maachis” he won the Filmfare Award for best storywriter. His film “Aandhi”, was a hit at the Box Office and he received the Filmfare Award for the best feature film.
Gulzar wrote dialogues and made the viewers laugh and cry with the characters of the film. The dialogues did wonders for the characters and they became larger than life. The famous character Anand from the film “Anand” is a classic example of that. Films like “Anand”, “Namak Haram” and “Maachis” won the Filmfare Award for best dialogues.
He directed an eponymous Television serial on Mirza Ghalib starring Naseeruddin Shah shown on India’s national TV Channel Doordarshan in1988.Other than writing songs for films, Gulzar has written title songs for TV serials for children like “Ek Kahani Aur Milli”, “The Jungle Book”, “Potli Baba Ki”, “Guchche”, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Daane Anaar Ke” which became very popular.
Gulzar Sahaab is one of the most respected and talented names in the Indian film Industry and just like his sun-sign Leo, he rules the Indian music world.
Gulzar is known for making brilliantly sensitive portrayal of subjects ranging from human relations, biographical profiles and often controversial social issues. For his contributions to Indian cinema, Gulzar was honored with Padma Bhushan in 2004, the third highest civilian award in India. Also, Gulzar and his movies have won numerous awards at the National level including awards for best director and best lyrics. He also won the 2002 Sahitya Akademi Award for ‘Dhuan’ (Short stories).
Gulzar has developed a new style of writing poems called Triveni which comprises stanzas comprising three lines rhyming with each other. His private album “Koi Baat Chale” with Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh has all the songs written in Triveni.
Gulzar’s Personal life
Gulzar is married to actress Raakhee. They have a daughter, Meghna Gulzar who has turned film director and made a sensitive film on surrogate motherhood, Filhaal. Her next movie has a lighthearted take on the marriage institution and is called Just Married. It was released in Feb 2007. Gulzar has given her nickname ‘Boski’, which is also an eponym for their home, ‘Boskiana’.

एक शख्स है जो खुद को अक्सर सफ़ेद पैरहन में लपेटे रखता है ….. यह शख्स मेरी समझ को मेरे समझदार होने से पहले से प्रभावित करता रहा है ….. जब सियासत के हुक्मरामों तकसीम की मिठाई बांटी तो ,इसे धकेल कर हिंद के पूर्वी हिस्से में भेज दिया गया ….. एक लाइन खींच दी गयी … वो सभी को नज़र आती है … एक और लाइन है जो इस शख्स के दिल पर नज़र आती है ….इसे अपने वतन से बहुत प्यार रहा है , पर दिखता नहीं है ….क्यूँ कि इसमें उन्माद नहीं है … और हौड भी नहीं है …पर .. इसे जय हो कहना बहुत भाता है …. शब्दों को तो एइसे हांकता है जैसे ईसा भेड़ो को राह दिखाते थे, और ताज्जुब होता है लब्ज़ भी इसका कहा मानते है और इसके एक इशारें में लोंगों कि दिलों जाकर बैठ जाते है…… यह सब कुछ लिखता है सभी के लिए लिखता है …..बच्चों से मोगली कि ज़बान में बात करता है तो कभी पोटली लिए बाबा की कहानियां कहता है …. मज़े मज़े में “कल्लू मामा” को गोली भी मार देता है …इसकी अपनी जुबां है .. पर समझते सभी है ……जो समझते नहीं वो महसूस कर लेते है ….. कभी-कभी लगता है , इसने अपनी रूह कि देखभाल का ज़िम्मा सूफियों को दे रखा है …..अह्सर्फियाँ हो या चाहे हुस्न इसकी संजीदगी को हिलाता नहीं है… यह “कजरा रे कजरा रे” करवा देता है पर करता नहीं है ….यह भी बड़ा छिपा रुस्तम है …. गुमनाम और मरे लब्जों को छूते ही उनसे बुलवाने लगता है ….. कभी यह “जिहाले-ए-मस्ती मकम ब्रंजिस” तो कभी ” लिहाफ -गिलाफ ” से कुछ बुलवाता है ….. इसकी जुबां का फैलाव तो मत पूछों ……पंजाब से लेकर असम तक है …… जब यह :थैय्या-थैय्या ” कहता है तो लोग “थैय्या-थैय्या करते है ….. जब ” आमी ते जाजाबोर ” कहता है तो लोग खुद को बंजारा समझाने लगते है …जब ” सुणियों जी बाबुला म्हार ” कहता है तो थार का सूनापन लोगों के दिलों में उतर आता है ….. यह हिन्दुस्तानी तहजीब का नुमाँइन्दा सा लगता है … इसने अपनी ज़िन्दगी को कतरों में जिया है और इन कतरों से घड़ा भरकर आपनी तस बुझाई है
मुझे पता है आप इस शख्स से वाकिफ है क्यों कि आप सभी में एहसासों के पुलिंदे ज़मा है …और यह बड़ी तसल्ली से उन पर लगी गिरह खोलता है ….इसके इश्क में ठहराव है पर सांस लेता है …बहुत गहरी लेता है ………एक गहरी सांस ले तो एक नज़्म उभर जाती है …. इसमें अर्धनारीश्वर वाली बात नज़र आती है क्यों कि अँधेरे में अपनी उँगलियों से औरत के मन को एइसे टटोलता है है जैसे सितार पर अपने पोरों को रखता है ..हर बार कुछ नया ढूंढ कर लता है … लेकिन है वो पुराना ही ……. यह औरत के दुःख की नुमाँइन्दगी करता हैं खासकर रूहानी दुःख की …….इसका इश्क भी “सतरंगी” है ….. “थोड़ी सी ज़मीन” पर अपने निखालिस इश्क को फैला देता है ..अपने माशूक को उसमें चलने के लिए कहता है …….अजीब है यह शख्स जो ” हाथों पर धूप ” मला करता है , ” हवाओ पर पैगाम ” लिखता रहता है …..

Gulzaar Saab ko mahaz ek shayar kahna unke talent ki beijjati hogi. Gulzaar Saab us aajaad panchhi ki tarah hain jo literature ke aakash mein bedhadak udta rahta hai, jisne kisi seema ko mahsoos nahi kiya. Khyaal mauzooda traditional kalpanaon aur shabdon ke jaal ko todti hui har baar us aasmaan ke baadlon se baarish kara deti hai. inhone apni shayari hamesha aam jaban ki bhasha mein ki hai, jo kisi kisi ek bhasha mein bandh kar nahi rahna chahti hai. isi liye hamein kai baar inke ashaar alag alag bhashaaon ko jodte hue nazar aate hain. Aaj jahan film industry ke log glamour mein doob kar andhadundh paisa banane ke chakkar mein pade hue hain, wahin Gulzaar saab ne apne serious literary work se sabhi ko inspire kiya hai.
